The UK Parliament has approved changes to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act, removing a discriminatory restriction that prevented same-sex people living with HIV from donating sperm or eggs. This legislative change marks an important milestone in the fight for equal rights across fertility, HIV, and LGBTQ+ communities.
This progress is the result of dedicated advocacy by the National AIDS Trust, the British HIV Association (BHIVA), and the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH). These organisations have worked tirelessly to challenge outdated policies and ensure fair access to fertility options for all, regardless of HIV status.
National AIDS Trust CEO Robbie Currie said “Today marks a significant victory for the rights of people living with HIV, particularly LGBT+ couples wanting to donate sperm or eggs. They will now have the same rights as anyone else – the right to receive equal treatment and the right to start a family.”
